UNESCO Chair INWEB coordinator Prof. J. Ganoulis is the scientific person responsible at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for a project entitled “Investigation of climate change in Greece and the impact on sustainability and the rural economy of hydropower projects: Application in the Nestos river basin.”  This has been granted by the Greek Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious, Special Department for the Management and Enforcement of Actions in the Fields of Research and Development and Technological Innovation,  as part of the Operational Programme "Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship" and Regions in Transition, National Strategic Reference Framework 2007-2013, National Action Range "Cooperation" "Collaborative Projects of Small and Medium Scale '

This research project aims to develop a methodology for integrated hydraulic works and water resources management by coupling mathematical modeling hydrological, hydro operation, climate change and economic models of environmental and social costs, in order to suggest ways making balanced decisions. The methodology takes into account both the requirements of the criteria governing an investment plan, and social welfare and rational management practices in a watershed.
